After winning the 2025 BET Awards Best International Act prize Nigerian music sensation Ayra Starr added yet another significant honor to her already impressive list of accomplishments. The well-known vocalist won in a competitive category that included such greats as Uncle Waffles (Swaziland) Rema (Nigeria) Tyla (South Africa) and Black Sherif (Ghana).
On Monday June 9 2025 the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles hosted the esteemed ceremony commemorating the 25th anniversary of the BET Awards. Celebrating Black excellence in music film television and sports was the focus of the evening. Presented by comedian and actor Kevin Hart this years event attracted a stellar guest list that included Shaboozey Tyler Perry Keke Palmer and Jennifer Hudson.
With ten nominations Kendrick Lamar led the field. He made a big impression by taking home four major awards including Best Male Hip Hop Artist Album of the Year and Video of the Year for his viral hit Not Like Us. Additionally rising rap artist Doechii had a historic night winning her first-ever BET Awards for Best Collaboration and Best Female Hip Hop Artist for her song ALTER EGO which featured JT.
Additionally GloRilla a fellow nominee won the Viewers Choice Award for TGIF earning her first BET trophy. With a special nostalgic homage to 106 and Park the 2025 BET Awards evening was jam-packed with incredible performances by artists such as Lil Wayne Ledisi Teyana Taylor Playboi Carti Mya Keyshia Cole and B2K. Kirk Franklin Jamie Foxx Snoop Dogg and Mariah Carey were among the honorees for the Ultimate Icon Award. With her most recent international victory Ayra Starr has further cemented her status as one of the most prominent Afrobeats voices on the international scene representing Nigeria with pride at one of the most important events for Black entertainment.
